Myself and a colleague, Robert, helped to set up and start the ‘Lucan Disability Action Group’ back in 2001. Back then we were working out of Muintir na Tirna in the village but only had the use of a single room which we had use of in the mornings as we shared the room with other groups. I came up with the logo, which is still used to this day, and can be seen on all their busses and website: www.ldag.ie . LDAG went on to move to its present premises in the Hills Industrial Estate still in Lucan Village. It was thanks to the great leadership and management skills of the late Joe Mooney (R.IP.) along with the assistance of Lucan 2000 Ltd and various government department grants that helped move LDAG to serve a vast area of Dublin and the surrounding counties.
As you will see, they also provide, since 2001 an excellent service of providing Personal Assistants for Third level students with disabilities. The service began with one student at UCD and today provides the service for over a hundred students attending DCU, DIT, DCFE, IT Blanchardstown, NCAD, NUIM, and UCD. This programme has received recognition, including winner of the 2005 Irish Times Living Dublin Awards in Third Level Education Category.
